Training Your Mind to Increase Mental Power

When you talk about how to increase mental power, you can get a vision of your mind, working fast and furious, at warp speed- solving issues and problems left and right.

This seems to make sense, right?

Except that as we enter this new age of enlightenment we begin to see that the mind has a ‘mind of its own.’ And getting caught up in the obsessive swirl of the mind following its agenda has become what Ekhart Tolle calls society’s ‘disease’ of compulsive thinking. And in actuality what we need to do is quiet the mind, and slow it down so that it can perform its duties when necessary with more power.

How many of you, for instance, have gone through a time of tribulation in your life and have felt the stifling sensation of not being able to escape thinking about the problem. You try a hot bath- still the thoughts continue. You put the TV on- the thoughts sit in the background. You take a jog- your mind continues to churn. You try to sleep- but cannot. Finally desperate, you may seek peace through a sleeping pill- only to wake up still tired and with the same thoughts present. The mind in this sense could be seen as some out-of-control computer. You keep hitting the off button, but it won’t turn off. And it doesn’t solve the problem you want it to. It just churns away at the problem it wants to focus on- with very little success.

At times like this, it seems the mind is your bitter enemy. Not only does it work compulsive, whether you want it to or not. But the messages it sends to you- such as “You’re a failure” “What’s wrong with you?” “Can’t you do anything right”- are disheartening at best.

So the task when you increase mental power becomes one of literally training the mind. We need to train the mind about when to turn on and when to turn off. And we need to train the mind to focus on our subject, not its own.

And I can give personal testimony that yes, this can be done. For instance, right now I am facing what could occur to others as insurmountable obstacles in my personal life. To name a few, my beloved father is passing away and I cannot be there with him. My back is healing from an injury, and the instability of a new business has me living in the question mark in life. But because I have trained my mind, and it does not run me, I live a stable, peaceful life, one day at a time.

I have many methods that I use to train my mind and increase mental power. Today I have been focusing on things that can be done while lying down for my back. I have utilized a brain entrainment CD, a hypnosis CD, and a meditation CD- all of which I highly recommend. I have also taken a nice walk in nature. This is inherently meditational, as long as you keep recalling the mind to ‘think of nothing.’ By the way, when you do this, you should also thank it for sharing. Remember that your mind, however misguided, is only trying to help you.

Here are two awesome tools for you to train your own brain.

Increase Mental Ability- Is there an easier way?

You actually can increase mental power. Everyone is saying it.

And science tells us that we currently use no more than 70% of our brain's capabilities. Yet we struggle to cram our brains with content in this, the information age, where it seems to be particularly important to ‘know everything.’ Then too, along with the cramming comes the seemingly fantastical claims that we can ‘have it all’- including wealth, happiness, abundance, and breath-taking love- simply by making up our minds to it, and using our brains in a more productive fashion.

I have come across a myriad of powerful mind changing tools. In the twelve steps of Alanon, AA, or OA for instance, there are wonderful books and slogans that hope to instill in people a new way of thinking. Then too, there are Louise Haye’s affirmations in the form of mini-books and daily reading cards. With these you can work everyday to replace the negative thoughts in your head with positive ones. There are meditations, yoga, and body-mind-spirit practices which seek to unlock the power of the mind by going within the body.

How often have you gone to a party in this, the‘ new age of enlightenment’ and heard someone talk about ‘mind over matter’ or a way to increase mental power. If you’re like me you nodded your head yes to the person across from you, while also thinking “Well, you can say it- but can you do it?” Or more to the point, you thought ‘But can I really do it.” And there may have been some frustration because you’d been working on that skill for a long time already. And if you’re like me, you were probably not acknowledging your successes- but only how far you seemed to be from your goals.

My experiences with ‘mind over matter’ have included some life-changing things- such as a course called The Landmark Forum- where you delve into the very question of what it means to be human. I have looked at myself as a human being, and how my very self was created at a young age. I have dissected the process so that I could shift my way of being to become all that I want to be. In this process I have looked at the very way my brain operates, which sometimes empowers me but very often dis-empowers me.

It has been said that the mind is a machine. It is a machine very much like a computer. When you input information into the mind’s machine, the mind comes up with an answer. Unfortunately, sometimes what you put in the machine is intrinsically flawed information. Life gives the mind a scarring experience. Life gives it other people’s words that cause pain. Life gives the mind physical and emotional trauma. Usually these events are not the average. They are not happening every day. But by their very oddity the machine that is the mind singles them out, and makes special note of them. It then outputs some negative thought into your brain that will stick with you for life- and may sometimes be so intrinsic that you can’t even see it.

I have often wondered, is it truly possible that the mind can speak to the very cells in your body? Is it true that the mind can heal cancerous cells, cause you to lose weight, whether or not you diet, and allow you to become masterful at some task that even if you believe yourself to have no skill in that direction. I have wondered if this were the true meaning of the biblical term that ‘faith can move a mountain.’ Perhaps truly believing does cause miracles. Or perhaps the truly believing is the miracle.

In the matter of ‘mind over matter’, I have recently uncovered a strong desire to skip over all of the hard work. I yearn to give up the daily reading of affirmations, and little bathroom books, and just have my brain work for me, instead of against me, as a matter of course. And this desire and wish has led me to the concept of “Brain Entrainment.” My fascination is this question. Can I actually retrain my brain to think in a more functional, empowering way- without even working at it? Can I even do this in my sleep. Many people say it is infinitely possible- and even probable- that this can happen, when given the right technique. I am experimenting with this method even now, and will let you know the outcome.

Until then, my task as I look at brain entrainment, seems to be one and only one thing… to keep doing it, plugging away at a steady pace, for a few minutes a day, every day. This may very well be the key that has me permanently increase mental power- no matter which methodology I choose.

This is an amazing "train your brain" tool.
